The Great War of Hammor was sparked in year 13, 1st Terram after the Orcs of the Occulan Imperial waged a war against all of Hammor Proper in an effort to stretch their territory and influence, believing it was their divine right granted by their patron god, Gorgorath. The Occulans first attempted to expand their home in the Gargon Mountains into the territory owned by the human dominated Libertus Empire, which encompassed the entirety of the modern Freelands, Angora, and the Kazzir Desert. Devastating losses by the Libertus Empire at the fort of Fartham and the city of Pyre forced the remaining citizens and soldiers to fall back to their capital at Yachyre. Led by their warlord king, Gunther, a final push by the Occulans against Yachyre ensured their victory over the Libertus Empire. In three short years, the Occulans were successful in conquering the entirety of the Freelands, and nearly eradicating all the civilians of the Libertus Empire. To celebrate their triumph, the Orcs razed all of the settlements in the Freelands and publicly executed the last Libertus emperor, Kilian. The surviving Libertus citizens fled to sanctuary in the Dag Forest, seeking asylum from the Occulans. With phase one of his campaign complete, Gunther turned his Orcish force’s attention to the Dag and began his brutal assault against the Fleet Elves.
A long and devastating conflict was waged between the two great powers of The Dag and the Occulan Imperial, with many battles ending in a stalemate. For a few years, it appeared that the Orcish axes and veracity were equal to the Fleet Elves’ archery prowess and home field knowledge. However, problems began arising for The Dag when the Occulans employed a slash and burn tactic, driving the Daggonian scouts from their trees and losing their strategic advantage. After six years of conflict, over half of The Dag was either taken by the Occulan Imperial or burned so badly that not a single shade of green was visible for miles. Many Daggonian envoys were sent to the Vargos Islands to beg for assistance against the Occulan threat, but it fell on deft ears. One more year passed and the Daggonian numbers waned and resources were becoming scarce. The Dag was very nearly on the brink of collapse, however on year 3 1st Terram, a critical mistake was made by the Occulan Imperial. 1st Magistrar Willan of Vargos, second in command and nephew to Supreme Wizard Targon, was conducting research on a mysterious obelisk located deep in The Dag when he was jumped by a band of Occulan forces. Willan was dragged to the Orcish forward base to stand judgement by Gunther. Willan pleaded over and over to the warlord that he was simply on a research expedition from the Vargos to investigate a magical anomaly that appeared in The Dag. However, Gunther was unconvinced by this story, believing that Willan was a forward spy for the Vargos. The Gunther then convicted the mage of conspiracy against the Occulans and sentenced him to death. Knowing his end was nigh, Willan sent a brief telepathic message to the supreme wizard himself, stating simply, “Stop the Occulan.” Willan’s face was pushed onto a stump by the warlord’s boot, as the massive axe of Gunther swung down onto the back of the mage’s neck.
